Autodesk Certification Cost: Exam Fees and Prep Budget

Autodesk’s standard retail prices for exams are $150 for Certified Associate (ACA), $200 for Certified Professional (ACP) and $250 for Certified Expert (ACE). The entry-level Certified User (ACU) exam is sold separately and costs about $94 in the US. In Ireland you pay in euro at a local rate, so treat the dollar figures as a guide and confirm the final price at checkout. This guide covers what each exam costs, what else belongs in your budget, and how to decide which level is worth paying for.
TL;DR
Autodesk’s standard retail prices are $150 (ACA), $200 (ACP) and $250 (ACE). Prices are set by country and taxes may be added.
The entry-level ACU exam is sold through Certiport, not Autodesk. The US voucher bundle with a retake and practice tests is $141, and it is valid in the US only.
The exam fee is only part of the cost. Practice tests, a course and software access for study can add anywhere from $25 to $500 or more.
For architecture students and graduates, ACU is the sensible first step. ACP suits people who already have real project hours behind them.
We found no published euro price for Ireland. Check the price shown when you book, not a US article.

What each Autodesk exam costs
Autodesk certification has two entry routes, and they are paid for in different places. That is the first thing to understand before you budget.
Level | Standard retail price (USD) | Where you buy it | Typical format |
Certified User (ACU) | About $94 voucher in the US | Certiport | 50 minutes, 30 to 35 questions |
Certified Associate (ACA) | $150 | Autodesk certification dashboard | Varies by exam |
Certified Professional (ACP) | $200 | Autodesk certification dashboard | 120 minutes, 45 to 60 questions |
Certified Expert (ACE) | $250 | Autodesk certification dashboard | Varies by exam |
The three higher tiers come from Autodesk’s own certification support page, which lists the ACA, ACP and ACE standard retail prices. The ACP format is confirmed on the AutoCAD Design and Drafting Professional page: 120 minutes, 45 to 60 questions, $200, and validity of three years.
The ACU price and format come from Certiport’s Autodesk overview. Certiport’s published exam lengths show 50 minutes for the Revit and AutoCAD ACU exams.

Why the same exam can cost different amounts
The dollar figures are standard retail prices. Autodesk says prices are set according to local currency values and that additional taxes may apply. For a candidate in Dublin, Cork or Galway, that means the euro figure at checkout may not match a straight conversion of the US price.
We looked for a published euro price for Ireland and did not find one. We would rather tell you that than invent a number. Before you commit, open the booking page through your Autodesk account or the Pearson VUE Autodesk page and read the price shown for your country.
Which certification should you actually pay for
The levels are not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one is the most common way to waste money.
ACU: the starting point
The Certified User exam is aimed at students and people early in their careers. It tests whether you can work competently in the software: navigating the interface, drawing and editing, managing views and basic documentation. If you are an architecture student or a recent graduate with a CV that says “proficient in Revit”, an ACU credential is a cheap way to back that up.
The ACU voucher is a one-year product in the US store. Certiport’s bundle page says vouchers expire one year after purchase and are non-refundable. Do not buy one until you have a date in mind.
ACP: the professional credential
The Professional exam is a different animal. It runs in the live application rather than in a simulation, so you solve problems in real Autodesk software. Autodesk’s own certification pages suggest candidates have substantial hands-on experience, in the hundreds of hours or more. At $200, it is worth taking when you have already worked on real drawings and models, not as a way to learn the software.
ACA and ACE
Autodesk lists ACA at $150 and ACE at $250. Which application and level are offered varies, so browse the Autodesk certification catalog for your software. For most Irish architectural technicians working in Revit or AutoCAD, the realistic decision is between ACU now and ACP later.
The real budget: exam fee plus preparation
The exam fee is what everyone quotes, but it is not the full cost. A realistic budget has four lines.
The exam itself. $94 to $250 depending on the level, adjusted for Ireland.
Preparation. Practice tests, a structured course, or both. Pearson VUE’s guidance indicates that prep can run from about $25 to $500 or more, depending on the method.
Software access for study. Students may have an educational licence. Working professionals usually practice on a work licence, which should be agreed with your employer first.
A retake margin. Certiport’s US bundle includes a retake, which tells you something: a fair share of candidates need a second attempt. Decide in advance whether you would pay for one.
A worked example
Suppose you are a third-year architecture student aiming for the ACU in Revit. A sensible budget looks like this:
ACU exam voucher: roughly $94 in the US, with the euro price at your booking page in Ireland.
Preparation: a project-based course covering the full Revit workflow, plus timed practice.
Study time: several weeks of evening sessions on real modelling tasks.
Now suppose you are a technician with five years in AutoCAD who wants the Professional credential. You budget $200 for the exam, a smaller spend on targeted practice, and your own experience does most of the work.
The second candidate spends more on the exam and less on learning. The first spends less on the exam and more on learning. That balance is the point: pay for the exam when you are ready, not before.
Time is a cost too
The stated exam length is not your whole appointment. Certiport notes that seat time includes extra administrative steps such as ID checks, tutorials and agreements, so a 50-minute exam takes longer from sitting down to leaving.
You can sit exams from home or an office with online proctoring, or at a test centre. Pearson VUE describes both options for Autodesk exams through OnVUE or a test center. Taking the exam online saves you a trip, but you need a quiet room and a machine that meets the technical requirements. Run the system check early.
How long a certification lasts
Certifications are valid for two or three years, depending on the certification. Fusion 360, for example, is two years, while many others are three. When it expires, you retest to renew. Over a ten-year career, a $200 ACP renewed every three years adds up, so factor it into your decision. Many people take one credential at a career milestone, such as a job move or a promotion, rather than maintaining several.

Is Autodesk certification worth the money
For many people, yes, with conditions. Certification gives employers a standard measure of software skill, which helps when your CV is competing with many others. It does not replace a portfolio. A hiring manager at a practice will still want to see projects, and a candidate with a clean Revit model and a certificate beats one with only the certificate.
The credential is worth most when:
you are a student or graduate with little work history to point to;
your employer or a framework you bid on values a recognized credential;
you are changing software, for example from AutoCAD-only to Revit-based BIM workflows;
you want a structured goal that forces you to cover the whole toolset.
It is worth less when you already have a strong portfolio and a job, and nobody has asked for it.
Perspective: how we would spend the money
We teach Revit and AutoCAD for a living, and our view is simple: spend on skill first, the exam second. Steve Fagan is an Autodesk Certified Trainer, and the pattern he sees is consistent. People who fail an exam rarely fail because of a trick question. They fail because they learned commands in isolation and never built a whole project, so the timed tasks feel unfamiliar.
That is why we build our courses around real projects. If you have modelled a house from site to sheets, a question about creating a section or scheduling a door is something you have already done. If you have only watched tutorials, it is something you have only seen.
Our advice for the budget:
Decide which credential you need and why. If nobody is asking for it, ACU is the cheapest signal.
Build two or three complete projects before booking. Do not book on the strength of a few weeks of tutorials.
Practice under a clock. Seat time and exam time are different things, and speed matters.
Book once you pass practice tests comfortably, not when you feel “nearly” ready, because the fee is paid either way.
Our 20 AutoCAD practice projects are a good free place to test yourself before you spend anything.

Preparing with S15Studio
If you are preparing for a Revit or AutoCAD exam, our Complete Revit and AutoCAD Training page covers the course with exam practice for the Autodesk Certified User level. Courses are project-based, include completion certificates, direct trainer support and lifetime access to materials, and carry a money-back guarantee.
If you would rather start with one application, these are our published prices, each a one-off payment:
Course | Price |
€20 | |
€15 | |
€79 | |
€79 | |
from €79 | |
from €100 |
The exam fee is paid separately to the testing provider, so a course plus the ACU voucher is the full bill. If you want the whole path in one place, the career package bundles Revit and AutoCAD training for architects.
Ways to keep the cost down
Start with ACU. It is the lowest-priced exam and enough for most students.
Use free material first. Free practice projects and official learning content tell you quickly where your gaps are before you pay for anything.
Ask your employer. Many practices reimburse exam fees for staff, especially when the credential supports their own BIM capability. Ask before you pay.
Ask your college. Some educational institutions are testing centres or hand out vouchers. Check with your department.
Do not buy vouchers early. They expire and are non-refundable in the US store.
Match the exam to the job. If you work in AutoCAD drafting, an AutoCAD credential is more relevant than a Revit one, and the reverse is true for BIM roles. Our guide on AutoCAD for architecture explains where each fits.
Common mistakes that waste money
Buying through the wrong portal. ACU is sold via Certiport, while ACA, ACP and ACE go through your Autodesk account. Autodesk’s own support note on ACU points to this split. Sorting it out early saves you time at checkout.
Using a US voucher in Ireland. The Certiport bundle above is for the United States only. Do not buy it from an Irish address and expect it to work.
Skipping the experience requirement. Attempting the Professional exam after a short course is the surest way to pay twice.
Ignoring renewal. If your employer needs the credential current, put the expiry date in your calendar.
